Apple iOS Update Enhances Scam Reporting with Modica’s Secure Platform
The latest Apple iOS update introduces a streamlined way for New Zealanders to report scam messages directly to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), thanks to a collaborative effort between Apple, DIA, 2degrees, One NZ, Spark, and Modica.
This initiative, driven by Apple and supported by NZ telcos, enables users of iPhone 14 (mobile provider dependent), 15, and 16 devices updated to iOS 18.2 to report scam messages seamlessly. By selecting the “Report Junk” option on a suspicious message, users can now share details directly with DIA, simplifying the process of tackling scam communications.
Stuart Wilson, CEO, highlights the critical role Modica’s platform plays in this initiative: “Using our safe and secure platform to automate scam reporting and deliver actionable data to DIA and fraud teams represents a significant advancement in protecting Kiwis from scams.”
The shared data empowers DIA, in collaboration with telcos like 2degrees, One NZ, and Spark, to identify malicious senders and take swift action to block further harmful messages. This effort bolsters privacy protection and helps safeguard New Zealanders from financial loss.
Joe Teo, Manager of Digital Messaging at DIA, emphasizes the importance of collaboration:
“We need all hands on deck to protect New Zealanders from scammers. This initiative demonstrates how we’re working together with the industry to make our networks safer.”
Paul Brislen, CEO of the Telecommunications Forum, adds:
“Empowering customers to report scam messages instantly strengthens our ability to disrupt these threats in real-time.”
Users who report a scam message via the new functionality will receive an automated response from DIA, with plans for broader rollout to other Apple and Android devices in 2025. For those without access to this feature, DIA’s 7726 Report Spam Service remains available for free scam reporting.
Together, Modica and its partners are ensuring safer, more secure communication channels for all New Zealanders.
